Year 10 GCSE (9-1) Design & Technology: Timbers

Course title: GCSE (9-1) Design & Technology: Timbers   Exam board: Pearson Edexcel Specification code: 1DT0
How will students be assessed?
 Examination = 50 % of total GCSE qualification (Unit 1DT0 /01)

Students will sit a one and a half hour examination at the end of the course in Year 11

Exam content:

1.       CORE unit of work which is comprised of learning that includes knowledge gained from all areas of the Technology curriculum
2.       Specialist chosen area: TIMBERS

 None examined unit (NEA) – similar to coursework (Unit 1DT0 /02)= 50% of total GCSE qualification achieved but only started in year 11 (Unit 1DT0 /02)

Students produce their NEA that consists of a digital folder of creative work and a 3D made product/ series of prototypes.

 

Half term Key content
1 (8 weeks) Task 1: Skills demonstration

Learners will create a number of small practical outcomes to demonstrate their competency using timber & manmade boards.

Term 1:  Jewellery Box production

·         Marking out
·         Permanent and non-perm joining techniques
·         Machining, power tools
·         Finishing techniques

Students will also be taught the exam content/ theory work  for their specialist chosen area of Timbers on a minimum of one lesson per week

2 (7 weeks)
3 (6 weeks) Task 2 – NEA practice work  

Research techniques and presentation
Product analysis and investigation
Initial design and development work
Product evaluation techniques

 Students will also be taught the exam content/ theory work  for their specialist chosen area of Timbers on a minimum of one lesson per week

4 (6 weeks)
5 (5 weeks) Term 3 – up to half term break

Product manufacture

Students will also be taught the exam content/ theory work  for their specialist chosen area of Timbers on a minimum of one lesson per week

Students will be provided with a range of briefs for their NEA on the 1st June 2017. Research and analysis will be done on this until the first lessons of year 11 in 2019.

Half term Key content
1 (8 weeks) NEA (Non Examined Assessment – Coursework)

Students have already been provided with a brief for their NEA in year 10 on the 1st June 2018

NEA research and analysis is completed before half term break and initial design work is produced.

Design Development is undertaken and prototype models are produced before the end of the term in December 2019

Students will also be taught the exam content/ theory work for the ‘Core’ part of the course on a minimum of one lesson per week. This content will include:

·         The impact of new and emerging technologies
·         Energy generation and storage
·         Smart and composite materials
·         Mechanical devices used to produce movement
·         Electronic Systems
·         Metals 

2 (7 weeks)
3 (6 weeks) NEA (Non Examined Assessment – Coursework)

NEA making begins and will be completed by the last day of the first half term. Along with the timetabled five lessons per fortnight the students are expected to attend a minimum of two after school workshops per week to complete their NEA making.

No exam content/ theory work will take place in the first half term of 2019

The NEA written evaluation document will be produced in the first two weeks after the half term break and submitted for assessment on Friday 8th March 2019.

After the first half term the students will also be taught the exam content/ theory work for the ‘Core’ part of the course on a minimum of one lesson per week. This content will include:

·         Papers & Boards
·         Polymers
·         Textiles
·         Analysis of professional companies

5 (5 weeks) Exam preparation and revision is done this term
