Celebration project will turn clock back 50 years at school
TWO of Prudhoe High School’s first ever pupils came face to face with the school’s youngest girl and boy this week. The meeting was at the launch of a major project to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary in 2008.Over the next year a host of musical and social events will take place to reunite former pupils and staff with old friends and colleagues. The school opened in 1958 and head teacher Dr Iain Shaw is keen to make 2008 a year of celebrations to ensure the school’s rich history is not forgotten. He said: “We are very keen to look back over 50 years of serving the young people of Prudhoe and surrounding areas. “There is a lot of history and a lot of things have changed in 50 years.
“We are looking for former pupils to come and visit the school again. We would like to see old photographs and hear people’s memories.” Faces from the past and present were at the school to launch the anniversary project on Monday.
Margaret and Raymond Cowell met as pupils at the school in the late 1950s and went on to get married.Mrs Cowell said: “It seems quite different now all these years later, but it is nice to be back and to be part of the celebrations.”
Also at the launch was former teacher Bob Browell, who worked at the school from 1958 until 1963, and current school governor George Nicholson, who attended Prudhoe High as a youngster. They were joined by 13-year-olds Danielle Sayer and Wesley Ford, the school’s youngest pupils.
The celebratory events will start with a Christmas carol service on December 20. A reunion weekend will take place at the school from March 28-30, with music concert performances from pupils past and present. The weekend will include an open day on March 29 when former pupils and staff will be able to view exhibitions of school-related photos and memorabilia. A further reunion event will take place on July 4, which will include a tour of the school buildings. It will be followed by a formal ball on July 5 that will include music from a professional band.
The programme of events has been planned by a working group made up of former staff and pupils.
Dr Shaw added that as part of the anniversary year current pupils at the school will be taking part in a creative writing project, in which they will write about the school memories of their parents and grandparents.
